To gain a world-class sporting event lawn, you will want to investigate a reel mowerĪs you can see from the preceding link, reel mowers are expensive, ranging from $2,000 to $7,000 and above. Try as hard as possible to walk in a straight line until you reach your grass edge.Īlthough a lawn striping kit will add value to your work it won’t give you that expert look. To help, pick a point in the distance and focus on it. The first run is by far the most important run as it will set how straight you are for the rest of your mowing session. Push the mower along the edge of the first run and it will bend the grass in the opposite direction. When you reach the end of the lawn, lift the deck of the mower, and position the wheels at the edge of your first run. Push the mower in a straight line to make one run (either along the length or width) of your lawn. To stripe your lawn, turn on your mower and adjust the height to the length you want to mow at. Once you have cut out the awkward angle of your lawn, you can follow a straight up-and-down pattern to create stripes in your lawn. To combat this, start by mowing an outline in your lawn to create an easy-to-mow square or rectangle. However, most lawns are uneven and can create awkward shapes to mow. This would make it easy to follow a striped pattern across the whole of your lawn. In an ideal world, your lawn would be a perfect square or rectangle. All you need is this knowledge, a mower, and a lawn full of cool-season grass.Ĭheap mowers purchased from any major outlet will have a flap on the back that has enough weight to bend the grass in the direction you’re walking. Mowing in one direction away from you will create a light shade and mowing toward you will create a dark shade. Here are some pictures of the roller assembly. To stripe a lawn with a push mower, all you need is to understand the concept of how light reflects off the grass. This roller assembly makes great stripes.Let me know if you have any questions! * Set screw bushings to keep the "L" bracket away from rubbing against the mower deck. * Shoulder bolts to connect the "L" bracket to the mower deck. * 5/8" Washers needed on one side of every wheel.the 1/2" PVC pipe is the same size as the wheel bushing and pushes the bushing out. You could also use a 1/2" nut with a large washer if you can't find the right Superstrut nuts. * 1/2" Superstrut nuts that slide in the channels. * 1/2" Bolts for all "L" bracket connections * PVC pipe 1/2" cut into small pieces for spacers between the wheels * Upper "L" brackets to attach to the mower 10" X 8" * Lower "L" brackets for the wheels 4" X 1 1/2" (I found some Superstrut brackets that worked perfectly) * Frame is made out of 2 pieces of Superstrut bolted together (can be found at Home Depot or any electrical supply house) * End caps - 5/8" for the ends of the steel shaft * Rollers are boat trailer rollers - 5" high X 3" wide X 5/8" diameter bushings This design is super flexible. It can be adjusted to fit any mower.push, walk-behind, tractor or commercial zero turn. For my Exmark Metro I did not have to drill any holes, I used the pre-drilled holes that were already there. a single roller because when you make sharp turns the outer roller are able to spin faster and follow the mover perfectly. My roller assemble is pretty heavy (approx 50 lbs) which really does a good job bending the grass over without hurting it. If you have access to some old boat trailer rollers you build it for a lot less.I've seen the chains and rubber strip stripers but I like the roller version the best. However, I saved $'s by building it myself and had fun doing it! I built mine under $150 including drill bits that I needed for the project. Here is my home made version.Looks very similar to a commercial one that I saw.Big League Lawns. Been looking to build a home made lawn striper for some time now.Been reading all the previous posts and looked at some commercial versions.
